While drafting this series about laughter, I spent some time thinking about what makes me laugh. For me, a funny story, well-delivered punch line and extra good lovin’, would have to be the Top 3 things that tickle my funny bone.

When I looked back at my recent foray into the world of phone sex idiots, I realized that no matter how hard I try, I just can’t find the FUNNY in the antics I’ve been introduced to – and I wanted to know why. Why are all the Mistresses laughing their collective asses off, while I just shake my head in amazement and softly chuckle?

To understand myself better, I pondered the other side of the coin – what I don’t find funny. Physical comedy like The Three Stooges has never made me laugh. Slipping on a banana peal, or comedy that demeans the little guy, always produces the opposite effect for me. I can appreciate the work that goes into it, but 2 minutes into an Abbott and Costello movie, my heart is breaking for poor Lou as Bud’s abuse rains down on him.

I want to know why I waffle – yes it’s funny – no it’s not. So I looked for the answer in a question – What is laughter? Is it more than its definition of – “rhythmic, vocalized, expiratory and involuntary actions”

How Stuff Works says laughter is: the physiological response to humor. Laughter consists of two parts — a set of gestures and the production of a sound. When we laugh, the brain pressures us to conduct both those activities simultaneously. When we laugh heartily, changes occur in many parts of the body, even the arm, leg and trunk muscles.

But if I don’t find something humorous? Why would I laugh?

“Laughter occurs when people are comfortable with one another, when they feel open and free. And the more laughter [there is], the more bonding [occurs] within the group,” says cultural anthropologist Mahadev Apte. This feedback “loop” of bonding-laughter-more bonding, combined with the common desire not to be singled out from the group, may be another reason why laughter is often contagious.

Peer Pressure! Friendship & Camaraderie!

It is when we are in a group that peer pressure can elicit laughter, even when the style of humor isn’t everyone’s cuppa tea. Even the group dynamic and pecking order can come into play. Don’t we all laugh, when the Boss does?

It is clearer now, why I and many others go against our true natures, and laugh at the expense of others. I know the next fellow with a tiny penis and cuckold fantasies calls, there’s going to be less Pep Talk and more guffawing.
